Quilting tips

Wash or not wash ….. That is the big question. Opinions may vary on that subject. My opinion is if you are using the fabric for appliqué….. yes, wash the fabric first then press the fabric before you cut. As to washing the fabric before you make a non appliqué d quilt…….I don’t……I like the look you get after the quilt is finished and then washed. It sort of gets all crunched … Sort of like it is an antique quilt and it also softens some. If you don’t like this “crunched look” wash all fabric first. And remember if you wash the fabric for the quilt top you need to wash the fabric for the back of the quilt. Also check your batting if it is not pre washed guess what…. Wash it too. Batting will shrink 3 to 7 % if not already pre washed. A lot to think about. But once you think it through and make a decision on what look you like it all comes natural.
As for hand or machine washing…. Up to you. Look at it this way. A little fabric, do in sink, a lot of fabric the washing machine. But remember…… gentle cycle.
Another thing to think about is some dark fabrics bleed. The colors of red – dark blue – and black may be the ones to give trouble. Make sure you check before you make your quilt if using these colors, not all bleed but some do.

You want an accurate cut of fabric. You can not get this with wrinkled fabric. Yes, PRESS after washing. Ironing may distort the fabric because as you iron you stretch as you go one direction and then the next direction. When you press the iron is put down in one location fabric heated wrinkled are removed, iron is lifted and then placed in another location.

Sorry if I have been long winded. Hope this information has been helpful.
